The Coughing House
La serie de acuarelas que conforman La casa que tose, fueron creadas durante el proceso de producción de la videoinstalación El Campanario como parte de la investigación sobre el terreno para realizar un alzado 3D de la iglesia pintada por mi abuelo en Tavèrnoles.
Durante un viaje al pueblo, buscando el lugar exacto desde donde el cuadro se pintó, me dí cuenta de que el volumen de lo pintado no se correspondía con el actual, puesto que la iglesia había perdido un piso. Buscando información en la web, resultó que al parecer, durante el siglo XVIII, un párroco había construido un alzado irregular sobre la nave principal de la iglesia. Mi abuelo la pintó así, sobrealzada, posiblemente durante los años 40 del siglo XX. No fue hasta dos décadas más tarde que la iglesia se restauró completamente, siendo demolido el piso extra para volver a su aspecto románico original.
Ordenando mis primeras copias del cuadro y los caóticos esbozos de la iglesia desde los cuatro puntos cardinales, me dí cuenta que la diferencia de volúmenes hacía respirar a la casa. Añadí un aliento humeante a las acuarelas correspondientes a la exhalación para hacerlas toser.
The series of watercolors that make up The Coughing House were created during the production process of the video installation The Bell Tower as part of field research to create a 3D elevation of the church painted by my grandfather in Tavèrnoles.
During a trip to the village, looking for the exact location from which the painting was made, I realized that the volume of the painting did not correspond to the current one, since the church had lost a floor. Searching the web, I found that apparently, during the 18th century, a parish priest had created an irregular elevation of the main nave of the church. My grandfather painted it like this, possibly during the 1940s. It wasn't until the 1960s that the church was completely restored, returning to its original Romanesque appearance.
Organizing my first copies of the painting and the chaotic sketches of the church from the four cardinal points, I realized that the difference in volume allowed the house to breathe. I added a smoky breath to the watercolors corresponding to the exhalation to make them cough.
